Interesting question bond_edge_man, I wonder what the first gag ever was, and when it was used. I’m guessing it was a hand over the mouth in the stone age. Come to think of it, in the past fear was usually the main incentive to remain quiet.
I like this gag though, nothing beats a gagged pretty-face if you ask me.

Gags are so very old, but their use was not to induce silence, but rather sheer humuliation. Already in Herodotus can we read about a king putting horse bits on all the prisoners made at war, and marching in front of him after his victory ^^
At least that’s one exemple, and more can be found… even under torture was there no real need for gags – it may even choke the person tortured, so… But maybe were there people who loved to gag others just for the pleasure to do so XD
