Many years ago I read a newspaper story about a village in Bulgaria that carried on their ancient custom (once a year, during one of the winter months) of tossing all the women and older girls of the town over a bridge and into the cold waters of the river. (Presumably they chose a spot that was not iced over!) Allegedly they did this in the belief that it helped to keep the women “healthy”.

This lovely lass looks very healthy indeed, and I like whatever it is she is bound to. It has that sort of massive solidity to it that says, “writhe and struggle if you want, but you’re staying right here!”

The picture captures that instant in which she experiences the shock of the cold water hitting her skin. It is very painful, but harmless, as long as she is not left out there in the cold. And as for the pain, I suspect she is making things a lot harder on herself than is necessary. The natural reflex when suddenly doused with cold water is to catch and hold one’s breath. (This must be some instinctual behavioral mechanism to avert drowning.) But holding one’s breath intensifies the pain, because it raises her blood pressure. She will feel more comfortable if she forces herself to breathe normally.

How do I know all this? I’m an expert. After viewing pictures like this one, I have taken many a cold shower afterwards, to regain my composure! (You ladies do not know the half of the mischief you induce in a man! :)
