Trick that you only know if you are…
A) …really old.
B) …one that knows all sorts of random factoids.
C) …an avid reader.
D) …a current or former telephone tech.
On an old phone system, lift the receiver and press the hang-up switch ten times. That will connect you with the operator. (The system hears the ten clicks and thinks it’s someone dialing “0”.) Will only work on an old analog system.
I’m not old enough to have ever phreaked a phone, but I’ve read there were all sorts of tricks you could accomplish with an analog system, a good sense of timing, and the freebie whistle from the box of Captain Kangaroo cereal.
