A Chambermaid In Shackles

According to Spanking Blog this is a domestic discipline scene from 1787, but I’d think the metal shackles at wrists and ankles seem excessive to keep on hand merely for punishing the household staff:

They would have had them to punish or control slaves of African descent; why not turn them on someone else in the household?

The caption is in French. France didn’t abolish chattel slavery until 1794 … so, maybe?
