In The BDSM Big Tent
Some things on the internet are easy. Some things are hard. Listing and reviewing the best BDSM porn sites, as Rabbits Reviews has been attempting for the last twenty years, is a big job that falls squarely in the “hard” category.
What makes it such a challenge? Lots of things, but the main issues boil down to 1) the galaxy of internet porn is extremely vast, and 2) “BDSM” is itself a big tent that holds a lot of circuses. It’s an enormous conceptual category that covers everything from bondage fucking to sexless sadism for the sake of pure pain to a dozen different kinds of power exchange games (from face fucking to boot blacking to public exposure and humiliation) that don’t specifically involve bondage or pain. So there are a lot of kinky sites out there, and no two people could ever hope to agree on which sites turn out to be on a comprehensive and high-quality list.
Don’t imagine that I’m exaggerating the conceptual complexity and vast taxonomical scope of those four little letters in the BDSM acronym. On Wikipedia, which is as close as we can get to a human hive-mind, they can’t even agree what the initials in the acronym stand for: “BDSM … is interpreted as a combination of the abbreviations B/D (Bondage and Discipline), D/s (Dominance and submission), and S/M (Sadism and Masochism). BDSM is now used as a catch-all phrase [that] may include cross-dressers, body modification enthusiasts, animal roleplayers, rubber fetishists, and others.” That sure clears it up!
It’s a lot easier for me here at Bondage Blog, because my editorial remit is simple. Is somebody restrained? Awesome, it goes here. Is the item kinky, but nobody gets tied up? Then, sure, I might post it anyway; but if so, it’s for diversity and flavor. I’m lucky this isn’t “BDSM Blog” because then I, too, would have to wrangle with tricky “is it BDSM or not?” questions.
If you menaced me with a sadistic dominatrix and forced me to essay my own definition of BDSM, I’d focus on the notions of domination and submission. Power exchange, it seems to me, is at the heart of the thing. But yeah, that still does cover a hell of a lot of waterfront.
