Bondage Sisters, 1926

You might be surprised to learn that bondage photos of actual sisters were appearing in edgy photography magazines in the 1920s. You might be, but you should not be:

art magazine photo of nude sisters enhanced in the darkroom to appear bound in chains

This photo, titled Sisters Enchained, appeared in the September 17, 1926 issue of Arts and Vanities magazine. The caption says this is “a composition of both art and camera work” with the art having been applied (in the darkroom, presumably) to “Alberta and Adamae Vaughn, of F.B.O. fame.”

It looks to me like the chains, and possibly even the background, was the art that was later applied to the photograph.

The sisters might not even have known that this was the fantasy the photographer had in mind for them. I wonder whether they saw the end product, and whether they were shocked by it.
